The Institute for Animal Breeding and Genetics, University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, establishes a DNA database for the Spaniel breeds under supervision of Prof. Dr. Ottmar Distl. The database allows for better research on canine hip dysplasia (CHD) by molecular genetic methods.
The objective is to obtain a genomic breed value assessment for CHD of Spaniel breeds more reliable knowledge about a dread disease in many breeds. This will enable a better prediction of CHD for the individual dog and improve our options to choose most suitable mates for breeding purposes.
For a reliable database blood samples of about 200 dogs of each breed are required. Kindly support the study by a simple blood sample of your dog. Just send the blood sample and the evaluation of the CHD status to the Institute or ask your vet for a blood sample when taking an X-ray for CHD evaluation purposes.
